General Hospital spoilers and rumors suggest that John Brennan (Charles Major) may be behind the unexpected retrieval of the gun from the river. But why? He has no reason to protect Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn) or her daughters, so he must have an ulterior motive. Could he and some secret associates have retrieved the gun for their own purposes?

It’s been a few weeks since Alexis was taken into custody for the murder of John Case (Adam J. Harrington). During this time, her daughters have been working tirelessly to secure her freedom, fully believing in her innocence. Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) and police divers searched underwater for the gun Alexis discarded, hoping that if the police examined it, they would discover it wasn’t the weapon used in John’s murder.

Honestly, it would have made more sense for Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) to slip into town, retrieve the gun, and leave quietly. A few weeks back, Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) accused Brennan of hiding Valentin and demanded that he bring Charlotte Cassadine (Scarlett Fernandez) back to see her mother. Brennan, however, denied any knowledge of their whereabouts.

Meanwhile, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) were also trying to find the gun. They knew the actual murder weapon was gone—Jason had melted it down along with the bullets. Sonny had originally planned to keep his involvement in the murder a secret and sought Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) to help him create an alibi.

As the pressure mounted on Alexis, Sonny found himself on the verge of confessing. In the General Hospital episode that aired on October 10, he even urged Carly to leave the country with Donna Corinthos (Scarlett Spears) to avoid facing perjury charges. However, Carly refused to go along with the plan.

The episode took an unexpected twist when Anna and the Port Charles Police Department received a package containing the murder weapon. Brennan may not be too concerned about proving Alexis or Sonny’s innocence, but he certainly holds Carly in high regard. It’s no secret that Brennan has feelings for Carly, and he would likely go to great lengths to help her out of a tough situation—just as he has in the past.

For example, he once helped Carly navigate a tricky situation with the FBI. When the Spencer family was searching for Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson), Carly asked Brennan for assistance, and he readily provided it. However, Carly feels uneasy about being seen with Brennan or dating him openly while she’s still pretending to be with Sonny.

Now, with the discovery of the gun, Brennan might hope that this could finally clear a path for him to be with Carly. But it’s also possible that Brennan has a deeper reason for finding the gun—one unrelated to Carly.

For some time, Brennan has wanted Jason to join the WSB, but Jason has consistently refused. Could Brennan’s efforts to help Sonny and Carly—two of Jason’s closest allies—finally persuade Jason to reconsider?

While it seems unlikely that Brennan would resort to blackmail, it’s logical that he would emphasize his good deeds to prove himself a trustworthy ally. But will this strategy work? Or has his true mission all along been to protect Valentin?

After all, Alexis and her daughters are also his relatives.
