Sad news to share: Daytime legend Alice Haining passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 95. The news was shared on Instagram by Chris McKenna (General Hospital, Joey, One Life to Live).
“We lost a radiant soul and daytime legend yesterday,” he wrote. “Alice Haining shone her light on this world for 95 glorious years. My family and I were so blessed to have her in our lives, however briefly. She was an unforgettable woman. Her final words were, ‘It’s nice to have an audience. Thank you, Alice. Good night, legend.'”
Prime-time viewers might remember her best as Miss Ellie’s friend, Mavis Anderson, on Dallas or Ellen’s mother, L. Morgan, on Ellen. Haining also appeared in numerous daytime dramas during her extensive career in Hollywood.
In the late ’60s, she played Stephanie Martin on The Edge of Night. Then, in 1970, she portrayed Maria Davis on Another World, bringing the character to the soap spin-off Somerset. In the mid-’70s, Haining played Ellen Seagull on One Life to Live. During the ’80s, she appeared as Mrs. Van Gelder on General Hospital.
The actress also graced television series like The Waltons, Flamingo Road, St. Elsewhere, and Hotel. On the big screen, she was featured in films such as Private Benjamin, Revenge of the Nerds, and The Glass House.
Alice Haining is predeceased by her husband, actor Steven Elliott. Our thoughts are with her friends and family during this difficult time.
