‘GH’ Hides Special Easter Egg In Sonny Corinthos’ Safe Code
On a recent episode of General Hospital, Sonny’s gun safe became the center of attention. Many viewers noted something special about the combination to Sonny’s safe, which pays homage to one of the series’ actors. Notably, this isn’t the first time the series used a code for a special in-joke.
Attention Is On Sonny’s Gun Safe Following John’s Death
At this point in the series, John “Jagger” Cates has just lost his life in a final confrontation with Sonny Corinthos in the rain. Cates’ death has impacted Port Charles. Sonny’s gun safe has become a point of interest, with the police searching his weapons. Dex even tells Anna he knew where his former employer keeps his gun.
On the September 6, 2024 episode, as noted on Soap Hub, Sonny had noted he had a missing gun. However, he still worked with the police and typed in his safe combination.
Zooming in on each number, the code Sonny uses reads 030163. This can be broken up into 03/01/63, which represents March 1, 1963.
The Date Honors Maurice Benard’s Birthday
This date is rather fitting, as it’s the birthdate of Maurice Benard, the actor who plays Sonny, having played the character since he first appeared on the show in 1993. Coincidentally enough, the date is also one month before General Hospital premiered on April 1, 1963.
Benard, born Mauricio José Morales, is also known for playing Nico Kelly is All My Children and for portraying Desi Arnaz in the biographical telefilm, Lucy & Desi: Before the Laughter. However, his best-known role is arguably Sonny, General Hospital‘s mobster kingpin.
Benard also notably reprised the role in series spin-offs Port Charles and General Hospital: Night Shift. In fact, Benard is so tied to the character that his own son Joshua has appeared on the show to play Sonny during his younger years.
The Series Has Also Made Similar In-Jokes Before
This isn’t the first time the series used a special code as an Easter egg for eagle-eyed viewers. In an earlier episode, the character Nikolas was seen in prison, with his uniform number reading 246015. This is a nod to Jean Valjean of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, who also opens up the story as a prisoner, with the number, “24601.”
The connection is also fitting due to the ongoing storyline. In General Hospital, Nikolas is a possible liver donor for his sister, Lulu. However, it turns out he’s not a viable match. Les Misérables also sees a character make a sacrifice for their sister. As part of his backstory, Valjean is initially arrested after stealing food for his sister’s children.
